Light Switches!

After the SoCal gambler it was clear my last minute wiring setup wasn’t cutting it, opening the hood to plug in relays wasn’t effective. I wonder why. This weekend I took the day to carefully implement the configuration I originally intended and move some lights to a better location for visibility.

Turns out that running all your lights at the windshield level creates a ton of glare and makes following in dust almost impossible. The solution is to either move them above or below line of driver’s sight. As I’m attempting to avoid cutting or drilling holes in the miata as long as possible the only option was to lower the spot lights. Enter a scrap piece of steel angle, drill and hack saw (I broke band saw blade and replacements hadn’t arrived).

Mmmm lumens

With a bit of planning and time with hand tools a simple three switch setup was ready. I don’t smoke and the car never had its ash tray so this fills out the void nicely, adds functionality and keeps the switches handy for driver and co-pilot. I’m happy with the result, it provides independent control for each ditch light and a central switch for the long range lower spot light pair. I used a phone cord for the wires from switches to the relays under hood, it is small and protected from most abuse. I merely had to reinforce the terminations with hot glue and heat shrink, hoping that should provide enough security for years of abuse.

Now with the lights wired up, we had to try and make it to an event up in Prairie City, however we planned poorly and didn’t get to have fun with the lights I spent 45 minutes zip-tying to the trunk rack, oh well still met up with gambler buddies to grab a bite to eat. Thanks for the invite Flynn.
