RS Blog 12 - Panel Insulation

Shorter post focused just on sound and thermal insulation. High level plan is to minimize annoying sounds entering the cockpit such as engine drone, injector/lifter noises if possible. As well as general road noise from the floor pan. I am realistic and acknowledge I won’t be able to reduce this significantly without applying a large quantity of sound insulation. Thus I’ll be compromising with some spray panel deadener (heavy) and thin insulation.

Chosen materials

  • 3M Thinsulate Acoustic Insulation AU4002-5: Relatively lightweight with what I assume is decent acoustic properties as well as crucially flame resistant. For reference the pieces used under floor double skin are approximately 36” x 20” total area, translating to under 8 oz or 1/2 lb. Not going to be any concerns and I will be using this in all locations possible.

  • LizardSkin Sound Control & Ceramic Insulation: Application of this pair is very easy provided you have an air compressor that can keep up with the air sprayer demands. I’ve read online it can also be brushed on in specific applications and I’ll be trying this approach for most of my panels to minimize overspray. I’ll be using a 4” fuzzy roller to mimic the rough texture when spraying. This has been used in the LS3 Miata to great effect, we still slightly melt inside and its loud however it is bearable and there is no other insulation in the car.
