Old Faithful Needs Some Love

My WRX has been a trusty workhorse despite everyone’s opinions it would explode at any moment. I received the wonderful news it was part of a class action lawsuit and earned an extended warranty on engine and drivetrain. Pesky valves and pistons becoming modular at inopportune times.

In the last 104,000 miles I have only changed brakes once, oil every ~7,000 miles and put in a new steering rack after I blew out the stock one. Literally nothing mechanical was done, including belts. Oh I did replace the battery after I forgot the interior light on for a weekend… but these are all normal Toyota levels of maintenance, not the Subaru expected EJ issues.

Time to perform proper care. Ordered OEM parts to deal with timing belt, pulleys, idlers, water pump, accessory belts and probably some stuff I’ve forgotten. I was all eager to dive in!

I love that Subaru is still producing parts for the EJ255. An almost 20 year old engine, look at the date code of the new timing belt cover!

Yes I cracked one cover and needed to replaced, but for $30 it was a deal.

Reality Strikes

Apparently Subaru decided to make all parts require specialty tools to remove and the tools are definitely required.

Crank pulley tool…

Intake cam tool…

Exhaust cam tool…

Hey if you need them for your rebuild and are near Concord…hit me up!!!

I still have more work to do on the 105k overhaul, but its should be nice and boring. If for some reason it is exciting I’ll be sure to post.

This was mostly to share my amazement with Japanese quality and absurdness of special tools. This Impreza is gonna be doing it on all fours for many years to come. I love my Subaru.
