FR-S Upgrades and Maintenance

Time to address those issues from our last track session at Laguna Seca. Most items were trivial like bleeding brakes or replacing pads, others not so much like hoping for no chassis damage from T6 incident. We shall address the list one-by-one.

Change front and rear pads

  • Full brake fluid flush - ensuring no air bubbles were a cause of braking issues

    • Simple task with my Motive bleeder and some help from a local kitty

  • Oil change (Mobile 5W-40) - ensure we didn’t cause damage last session and there is no poor wear.

    • Easy peezy until I realized the drain plug makes a huge mess coupled with filter draining down block…

  • Mount and balance RS4 245/40R17's on the RPF1s

    • Nice and simple. Take them down with Miata and get mounted. Looking great.

  • 5mm wheel spacers (front only) & ARP wheel studs

    • The new studs were pressed into new hubs. T6 offroad excursions don’t treat things nicely, this is a preventative action.

    • Ended up with 8mm to clear the new RPF1 against the AP Racing calipers

  • Clean air filter

    • Once it was found, nice and simple. Buried between bumper cover and crash structure

  • Routing for brake ducting

    • This was the fun item. Looping 3” ducting from the carbon fiber brake ducts through suspension opening into engine bay and around through to front opening. Required removing bumper to get ducting through driver side. Hoping there will be enough flow, testing will tell.

  • Raise suspension 1/8" for better clearance

    • I love quality suspension, the Tein coilovers made this simple with their independent adjustment of pre-load and ride height. Raised just a single turn which is less than an 1/8”. This will be okay considering we changed from 245/40R18 to 245/40R17 reducing overall wheel diameter.

  • Swap over the side marker lights

    • Check and check. EZ.

  • Re-charge A/C system before it causes any harm to components, also helps with defroster.

    • Low on priority list, but local shop will take care of it when I get a chance before next outing.

Few Last Notes

Another few images to capture the details from this work.

Additionally added Haltech TMPS sensors in each wheel for added telemetry. A no question add on for $200 while we are getting new wheels and tires. The sensors have been programed to alert driver to low pressure or leaks via a CEL. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find a way to trigger a tire pressure sensor. Set at any leak or pressure below 24 psi.

Car is ready to go deep on corners without any brake fade.
